I have been so busy with other stuff that I have completely forgotten about my blog. I am enjoying myself and I guess that is the most important thing.
Work is great. The people who work in the pool and the visitors are just so nice. I feel like I’m a part of a family. There aren’t many people working at the pool; Russell, Mark, Jenna, Patrick and Joan. Like I mentioned before Russel is the manager. The funny thing is that I have more qualifications than him, but he’s real cool about it and picking my brain every now and then. Mark is a great guy. He is a few years younger and impressed by all the things I’ve done in my previously job. He asks me heaps of questions and is very eager to learn new things. Jenna is about 17 years old. She used to volunteer in working behind the reception, so when she was legally old enough to work Russell gave her a job. Patrick is lifeguard in the swimming pool and on the beach. He’s a nice guy, but lazy at times. And Joan, well what can I say about her? She is not everyone’s favorite because she is such a suck up to Russell and can be bitchy to Mark, Jenna and Patrick. She’s nice to me in my face. I guess she knows I won’t take any shit from her. Good thing is I hardly never work with her. I am always teamed up with either Mark or Patrick.
I spend my working days training a group of adults, teaching some kids, life-guarding, testing the water and working the reception. It is such relaxing work. Stress is not a word that you will find in my vocabulary here. The kids are wonderful and everyone else who comes in the pool are so nice too. They all come and have a quick chat and actually thank you before they walk out. What a difference to my old job!
Robert actually came for a swim during one of my shifts. I had told him I worked in the pool. He actually asked me if I wanted to come for a drink with him and at first I didn’t know what to say. He is a nice guy, but I don’t want to be more than just friends. So I told him I would have a drink with him ONLY if he didn’t think anything of it. I said that I wasn’t ready for a new relationship, but I’d love to have new friends. He had such a disappointed look on his face. I don’t think he was very interested in that drink anymore, because he mumbled that he better get some laps in and walked away to do some swimming. I felt a bit bad about it, but I thought it would be better to be honest now than give him false hope.
When I went to the gym that night Lee was working there again. He had heard all about my little meeting with Robert that morning. I guess news travels fast on this little island. He said I had done the right thing, but that Robert was hugely disappointed. What do you expect? I know the guy for less than a week. Anyway, Lee told me that he had a girl that was almost stalking him. I was surprised that he was so open about this. Before it was always a little bit difficult to keep a conversation going with him and now all of the sudden I felt like he poured his heart out. This girl was constantly all over him, even though he told her off a couple of times, and even followed him around at times. This week she had even joined the gym/boxing club because she knew he was working out and helping out there. Ouch! I felt sorry for him.
After my boxing session with Tony I bumped into Robert on the way out. He hardly dared to look in my eyes. I felt sorry for him so I said: “Does the invitation for a drink still stand?” He was very surprised that I asked, but said: “Uh, yes I guess“. So I said: “How about having that drink now?” He said okay, so we just had a cup of coffee at the gym and had a bit of a chat. I thought it would be a good idea to explain to him why I am not interested in a relationship right now and why I had moved here. I think it was good we had that chat, because he said he could understand now and that he would love to be just friends…
